Watering Advice

So the weather is good and your plants need water
Preferably when the sun is not directly on the trees & plants but do give them enough water, especially if you have them in pots or in ground that is built up or not great soil.
We can supply seep hose and even timers if it makes it easier but if you've gone to the trouble of buying beautiful trees, hedges & plants please please please water them19146199_1368147089944717_5632808607666673327_n.jpg

Some advice from the RHS on watering

Ideally water plants early in the morning, to avoid evaporation loss during the day. On warm summer days, evening watering is also likely to be effective, the dry soil soaking it in readily and low humidity at night reducing risk of disease.

To determine the need for watering, inspect the soil at a spade's depth. If the soil feels damp, there is unlikely to be any need to water, but if it is dry, then watering is probably required for some plants.

Be aware that clay soils can feel damp even when all available water has been used and that sand soils can feel dry even if some water is available. The only way around this is to develop experience in matching the observed state of an individual garden’s soil to the growth rate of the plants. Wilting is usually preceded by changes in leaf position and darkening of leaf colour.

For plants in pots, the compost looking paler or feeling dry to the touch and the pot becoming lighter in weight (and consequently more prone to blowing over) are all signs that the compost is beginning to dry and is in need of water.

It is better to water the garden before drought really sets in, to keep the soil moisture levels even and avoid soil moisture deficits building up.

Once drought has set in, it is futile to try and remedy this by light watering over a wide area. Light watering may encourage surface rather than deep roots, leaving plants more susceptible to drought. Instead, make a single thorough watering of the plants that are suffering. Try to water in the cool of the evening or the very early morning, so that less water is lost immediately to evaporation.

Creating Privacy, naturally with specimen trees

Creating Privacy with the use of a well placed tree or a row of specimen espaliered frames is what we do best.  We have so many options to block unsightly views or resolving privacy issues that we can supply, deliver and plant too should you need us to.  Mature trees, espalier trees  and evergreen trees are all ideal for screening naturally.  Well placed specimen trees can disguise an unsightly view or block a window in a neighbours house.

Contact us for ideas on how to solve your privacy or screening issues or see below how we resolved one Dublin residents issues in her City Garden

We also have trees pruned using the Japanese art of Niwaki, we call these cloud trees and like the topiary these stunning creations are art forms and act as sculptures for your garden, we have a range of these but can source bespoke creations too and have them with you within 7-10 days.

niwaki.jpg

This Pine tree has been pruned into a cloud tree using Niwaki principles,  literally meaning 'garden tree' - being distinct from 'Bonsai' meaning 'potted tree'. Niwaki are the bigger, easy ones that go in the ground. Bonsai are the little, difficult ones that stay in pots.

Evergreen Oaks

This week we seem to be inundated with requests for large evergreen trees for screening & privacy & which trees are the best for this purpose.  We have several trees that we recommend but undoubtedly our favourite option is the Quercus Ilex. the Evergreen Oak or Holm Oak as it is also known.

Quercus Ilex is a native of Mediterranean countries, but it has been grown in and are now thought to be a native of Ireland. It has dark green foliage, that is similar to the Holy or Ilex giving it the name, all year round with yellow catkins in spring producing acorns in autumn.

The timber is hard and long-lasting, used for joinery, stakes and for charcoal. This oak tree won the Award of Garden Merit in 2002 and is surely one of the most majestic of evergreen trees grown in this country.

If left to its own devices Quercus Ilex forms a large tree with a densely rounded habit although its most popular form is that of a standard tree with a columnar shaped head (shown below)

Quercus ilex.jpg

It is surprisingly versatile, being suitable for coastal plantings, topiary and as stilted hedging. Holm Oak trees also tolerate shade and air pollution. Suitable for parks and gardens but thriving best on free draining soils.

The Evergreen Oaks being just that makes them ideal for screening & privacy in the form as shown above in a column shape on a standard stem of approx 2m with a head depending on the girth and age of the tree of around 2m+ in height (Making 4m+in total) just like the ones shown which are in excess of 5m on a 20-25cm girth stem. a stunning mature trees & screening plants.

Some of our specimens here

The Quercus Ilex is also ideal in a bush form from the ground and also as an espaliered tree creating a screen on a single stem, again around 2m in height with a flat frame of around 1.8m in height and 1.5m wide like the ones shown in the image below, perfect trees for privacy.

Stocking up on specimens for Spring

It has been a mild Winter and Spring is really coming around quickly, the daffodils that line the lane up to the nursery are all shooting up and our early herbaceous plants are all starting to develop nicely.  We have just spent a week in our Italian partner picking out the best of the specimen plants & trees that are ideal for screening, giving privacy or adding a touch of maturity and style  to your garden.

We were picking out plants & trees for a number of commercial projects we are working on and lots of stock for the nursery and I can tell you we have some amazing stock due to arrive in the nursery over the next few weeks.  Some of the stock is very individual and some we only have limited numbers of so you can order/reserve anything and I will be getting as much of it onto the specimen stock pages over the next week for you to see. If there is anything you are looking for, in the meantime I will be happy to give you details, just contact me on the usual details 045 879170 or jo@caraghnurseries.ie

As most of these plants are too big to get in the boot of your car, rest assured that we have delivery & planting options as well as a design service for you if that helps.

Does gardening really count as exercise?

Garden-Workout.jpg

Indeed it does, research has found that lots of gardening jobs qualify as medium to high intensity or cardiovascular workouts. a study found that jobs like weeding, rakeing, digging, mulching, hoeing and lots of the usual jobs around the garden were especially good forms of physical exercise add that to the fact that you are getting a good dose of Vitamin D in the fresh air and the bonus of a stunning garden and you really are quids in.

For lots of inspiring hedging & trees that you could be planting in your garden right now and saving money too

We also have the full range of sizes from 180cm from the ground to 400cm on a clear stem we really can cover every option & request.

NO PRIVACY? Trees for an instant screen

Caragh Nurseries

Trees can be used to help you achieve privacy in your garden and they can be used in many ways to achieve a good level of natural screening.

Privacy and screening is one of the things we are asked about most often and we have a large range of trees that will add instant privacy in your garden up to approximately 18ft tall. We can supply a large range of instant hedging if you need a full screen from the ground. Many of our enquiries are from customers who crave trees for privacy in their garden. They are commonly used to screen overlooking windows or to block out another building or unsightly object. All of our screening trees and hedging are available to view on the nursery at any time.

There are a large range of the trees and hedging on the website but do give us a call with the requirements and we can talk you through the options that would work for your garden.

Our prices include VAT and we can deliver any of the products Nationwide, at a very reasonable cost.

I saw the phrase recently 'Hedge on legs' and that describes some of our espalliered trees very well. These are a great solution to difficult to solve privacy and screening issues.

These trees will have a clear stem of around 1.8-2m and then a crown forming above this height that will sit just above your 1.8m fence panel. Evergreens and good deciduous trees can be trained for this purpose. After planting, an extra 50% new bushy growth should be obtained within one to two years.

If you need more help please do not hesitate to phone us. We are experts in the use of screening trees and hedging and we will be happy to help with your project!

What is bare-root and rootballed ?

Bare Root

There really does seem to be very little knowledge about bare-root and rootballed trees and hedging and why and when to plant them so I'm hoping over the next few weeks to take the mystery out of it

Bare-root is simply that we lift the tree or plant out of our fields here and shake all the soil off so you can just as it says on the tin, see the bare root. Lots of deciduous trees & hedging, up to a certain height and age can be sold in this way from November through to March and the earlier in the season the better.  The USP's of these are;

  • the plant is dormant and so suffers least disruption
  • the lack of pot, soil etc quite simply makes it cheaper
  • by the time the spring leaves come the plant is at home and ready to get down to the business of growing and/or flowering.
Certain plants can not be lifted bare for a number of reasons and these include evergreen trees and hedging and more mature trees, we can advise you on specific species and their tolerances at heights to being lifted. These include Laurels, Pines, conifers, yew as well as many more.

Rootballed means that we lift the plant with a ball of soil attached to it, wrap it in a hessian or other similar biodegradeable cover and you plant it with the cover stiil on causing least disruption to the root structure. The main difference between this and potted trees is the range of plants/trees and sizes available, the other reason is that a plant/tree that has been able to grow in the ground rather than in a pot has a much better root structure therefore a stronger, usually bushier specimen.  We quite simply do not have enough room to pot the complete range of stock to cover the full year hence a bigger selection at this stage.  Rootballed trees are available NOW! It's been cold enough at nights to lift these.

What we can offer thats different?

Delivery, planting and advice, advice, advice.  We have an abundance of knowledge about how they grow and we love to share it with you.

Why is this tree loosing leaves ? What growth rate should this hedge have? If I drive the plant with fertiliser will I loose bulk? What will screen my view of my neighbours house (and theirs of yours)?

Over the next few weeks I'll be updating you on how to plant these, where to plant and lots of other questions that we get asked every day, with a few videos to boot. In the meantime ASK AWAY....

Italian specimens

Caragh Nurseries

We have a large stock of specimens currently, from Italian Cyprus and amazing espalliered trees to Olives and Fig trees, lots of mature Japanese Maples, Magnolias and evergreen Oaks. We also have a large selection of standard and half standard trees and shapes.  If we don't have what you are looking for we do have loads arriving every couple of weeks so we can get it quickly what we don't have already.  This stock moves very quickly so isn't always on the website so do give us a call and I can give details or send you out the current and incoming lists to tempt you.

We work alongside our friends and colleagues in an Italian nursery based in Pistoia in Tuscany, the mecca for all specimen plants.  The growth in this particular basin is far superior than we could ever grow large trees, hedging and plants in this country and we only buy from Veronica and her family as we have a long standing relationship with them based on how their growing techniques and the way they put quality first above all else and also based on trust.

Where we can grow a lot of plants well in our green (and wet) country for this kind of growth we could do with their kind of sunshine but they are hardy as they have colder winter than we do so rest assured of that and we have worked with the nursery for over 10 years so we know what does well here and more importantly, what doesn't.  We won't be stopping growing ourself as this is what we do best but for some of these large specimens we are bringing in loads every couple of weeks.
