Not thought of as the most interesting part of the garden but probably the most widely purchased item.

A hedge defines your property and is the first thing people see when they approach your home or business. A hedge can give you privacy and can be much more attractive than a wall or fence.


Again the different options are endless with evergreen hedges being popular for year round cover but other hedges can still give you that too. Ilex Silver Queen / Holly Silver Queen

A dense evergreen shrubby Holly with pinky purple new shoots & leaves that turn into a deep glossy green with a broad cream edge, flowers are small white and contrary to it's name this Holly is male of the species.   Grows upto 5metres but can be managed well to work as a nice hedge

Lavender angustafolia

Lavender angustafolia

A compact form of the popular English lavender, it produces dense spikes of fragrant, deep violet summer flowers above slender, aromatic, silvery-grey leaves. It is possibly the best lavender for a small pretty hedge, edging paths and borders and the aromatic foliage perfumes the air if you brush against it. It also works well in a gravel garden, or clipped into a formal sphere for a contemporary look. The flower-spikes are highly attractive to bees and other nectar-loving insects.

Ligustrum ovalifolium

Ligustrum ovalifolium / Privet

Privet makes a crisp, pollution-tolerant hedge for an urban or surburban site. The small, oval, bright green leaves provide dense cover. Thriving in sun or shade, the lustrous, dark green foliage provides an evergreen backdrop for ornamental and feature plants. If grown as a hedge and kept pruned, it is unlikely to flower.

Photinia Red Robin

Photinia Red Robin

With its red, glossy young foliage, and large, rounded heads of ivory flowers, this versatile evergreen shrub is deservedly popular. It colours up best in full sun, and will usually only flower in sunny conditions, It can cope with hard pruning, so can be trimmed to form an informal hedge or clipped into strong shapes. The flowers appear in mid and late spring, and are sometimes followed by spherical red fruit.

Phyllostachys aurea / Fish pole or Golden Bamboo

Phyllostachys are the most common of the bamboos, tall, clump forming and evergreen, the aurea are large with bright green stems that yellow with age.  Grows tall upto 4metres and clumps well in a sheltered position.  Makes an unusual but effective hedge

Prunus Laur Rotundifolia

Prunus Laur Rotundifolia / Common Laurel

Dense, bushy, evergreen shrub with large glossy, dark green leaves. It makes an excellent hedging plant. It is extremely hardy and is an ideal due to its fast growth rate and year round cover. It can cope with deep shade under trees was well as full sun. Small white flowers are produced on spikes in mid-spring, followed by cherry red berries.

Prunus laur. Etna / Laurel Etna hedge

A beautiful dark green, evergreen hedge with glossy leaves that start a stunning orange to red beautiful when new, making a beautiful contrast.  It is slower growing than the common laurel making it easier to maintain and although it is dense it will not grow as wide.  This hedge will only need cutting once a year. A beautiful hedging plant that when planted at this size are very wide so the need for fewer plants.

Prunus Lusitanica

Prunus Lusitanica

Similar to the rotundifolia but slightly more elegant though not quite the same growth rate or as dense initially. It is conical in shape with dark green, lustrous elegant leaves. There are white flowers in slender upright racemes in early summer but it is primarily grown for its strong shape. There are dark purple-black fruits in autumn. This can be grown as a specimen shrub or used to create a formal hedge

Pyracantha orange glow / orange Firethorn

Orange glow is a large fast growing, upright variety of Pyracantha that makes it ideal as a hedge.  It has small glossy leaves and is spiny with clusters of white flowers in the Summer months followed by an abundance of long lasting orange berries.

Pyracantha Red Column / Red Firethorn

Dense and spiny evergreen hedge with bunches of small white flowers in Summer and a magnificent show of round red berries in Autumn that the birds love but there really is plenty to go round.  It's upright habit make it ideal as a hedge or for training against a wall and it is fast growing so will cover quite quickly to an eventual height of around 8-9 feet but will spread even wider.

Taxus bacatta

Taxus bacatta / Yew

Needle-like, dark green leaves on horizontal branches and fleshy, cup-shaped, bright-red autumn fruits on female plants. The dark green foliage of this slow-growing, evergreen conifer provides an excellent background for shrub and herbaceous borders. Broadly conical in shape it  makes a fabulous formal hedge.
